Tokugawa Treasure Chest
For the Week of September 9th - September 15th
A finely crafted and painted “treasure box, “often referred to as a “captain's chest” because of its style, having been used to hold precious cargo by the Captain on Japanese ships. After extensive research, we find that this particular example is among the best still in existence. The ironwork is extensive and well-crafted. The rare floral relief painting is exceptional and covers almost the entire cabinet, including the interior. Additionally, there is the Tokugawa crest, in gold, prominently displayed on the front door. This is the crest used by the Shogunate, and here, it is particularly credible that it is of the family based on the overall quality and age of the chest. For those of you who recently watched the miniseries, Shogun, you would’ve seen this crest on the armor and backgrounds of Lord ToroNaga. He was the lead Japanese character who became a shogun. The cabinet shows a lovely patina and age-appropriate wear, which add to its beauty and sense of presence. Edo Period (1603-1868).
