Gilded and Painted Display Chest

$2,100.00

For the Week of November 4 - November 10

An excellent Japanese cabinet with a sense of gravitas. The cabinet is designed to be put on top of another piece of furniture. (Although it does look quite handsome sitting by itself as on the top there is an excellently portrayed gilt landscape and river scene). There is exceptionally fine, high-relief, gold lacquer work on four of the sides. These naturalistically rendered gold landscapes have acquired a slightly dark patina that has fortuitously enhanced their’ sense of age as well as the definition of the detail. The metal fittings, including the handles, are of top quality and contribute nicely to the overall feeling. When the two major front doors are opened you are greeted with enchanting gilded landscape scenes on both the interior of each door and the set of six drawers and “safe” areas. Edo period 1603- 1868
