Tokugawa Captain's Chest
A finely crafted and painted “treasure box“, often referred to a “captains chest” because of its style having been used to hold precious cargo, by the Captain, on Japanese ships. After extensive research we find that this particular example is among the best still in existence. The ironwork is extensive and well crafted. The rare floral relief painting is exceptional and covers almost the entire cabinet, including the interior. Additionally, there is the Tokugawa crest, in gold, prominently displayed on the front door. This is the crest used by the Shogunate and here it is particularly credible that it is of the family based on the overall quality and age of the chest. For those of you who recently watched the miniseries Shogun, you would’ve seen this crest on the armor and backgrounds of Lord ToroNaga. He was the lead Japanese character who become shogun. The cabinet shows a lovely patina and age appropriate wear which add to its beauty and sense of presence. Edo Period (1603-1868).
