This rich and elegant Japanese table- top “precious objects” display cabinet has beautifully drawn lacquered and gilded naturalistic scenes over the majority of its visible area. A sense of perspective and dimensionality is created by using flush and relief techniques on different parts of the designs. All are tastefully appealing against with the stark black ground. Nicely detailed metal fittings adorn the chest overall.     Meiji period (1868-1911)
