Pair of Kaioke Containers
A lovely original pair of Kaioke, which were the containers for a Japanese shell called Kai Awase . They are crafted in black lacquer with freely, yet professionally, drawn floral and curvilinear designs throughout. This game was played primarily by the aristocracy with various relatives, although, a commoner who was particularly gifted in poetry could be invited. These results were often recorded and the host would prefer the record to demonstrate the highest quality of commentary. The fittings on this pair are crafted in a brightly polished copper with engraved designs. The brightness of the copper color occurred because the previous owner preferred the more brilliant contrast with the black background to the more natural patination with subdued coloring. An unusual feature for this pair is that it has the original red wrapping cords. Some wear, but overall it is harmonious and simply adds to their historical sense of presence.
