Gold Lacquer Tokugawa Display Stand

$5,500.00

This large and impressive Japanese display/tea on the stand was created with “gold dusting” over virtually the entire surface. The four doors and two drawers have lovely bird and floral designs done in gold lacquer with low relief. The lower door’s scenes depict the 3 major symbolic objects indicative of longevity. (The crane, the pine, and the bamboo.) Another very intriguing and unusual aspect of this striking chest on the stand is the use of the Tokugawa (shogunate) crest over the entirety of both pieces. There is also extensive use of finely worked metal fittings on the façade and corners. Irrespective of whatever important artifacts might be displayed on this type of furniture, the richness of technique and form of this piece, by itself, would allow it to beautifully stand alone! Meiji period (1868-1911)
