This impressive painted and gilded display/tea chest Is simply “invigorating”! The entire chest is highly decorated with lively scenes of birds, both perched and flying among the trees, and swaying flowers and grasses with occasional butterflies for variety. There are also extensive finely and intricately crafted metal fittings decorating surfaces and edges almost over the entire chest. Note that the inside of the doors are also painted and gilded with charming bird and floral designs. Meiji period (1868-1911)
