This excellent and rather rare Japanese Sendai two-part chest has the original traditional extensive and finely wrought metal work. This particular technique is what made Sendai pieces famous and a favorite among both collectors and decorators. The carrying handles are still strong and intact, as well as the two pins which hooked two chests together with the handles, when the chest is not being carried. A lovely toned and consistent colored lacquer completes the quality appearance. The bottom right-hand corner has the traditional and desirable“safe box” seen on many of the better Tansu.    19th century
