This traditional Japanese hibachi is among the finer examples of this form. The beautifully grained keyaki wood creates a lovely effect on all four sides. The top banding and handles were constructed with persimmon wood, which is a hardwood that has a lovely graining that shades from black to light brown. This wood is used almost entirely for detail work on furniture rather than having individual pieces completely constructed with it. The fine iron The fine iron handles, the beveled top and bottom banding as well and the corner work are more indications of the deliberate creation of a quality functional work of art. Additionally, the interior still has the copper lining on which sand and coals were usually placed when this item was used for heating and cooking. 19th century
