This rich and elegant Japanese table-top “precious objects” display cabinet has beautifully drawn lacquered and gilded naturalistic scenes over the majority of its visible area. Flush and relief techniques create a sense of perspective and dimensionality in different parts of the designs. All are tastefully appealing against the stark black ground. Nicely detailed metal fittings adorn the chest overall.     Meiji period (1868-1912)
